Eye of the Beholder

Print Design | Photography

This is a book focused on the essence of a block in Downtown Detroit. Paradise Valley, also known as Harmonie Park, is a blossoming, small-business retail and restaurant hotspot in the heart of Detroit.

Many of the signage found on this block is portrayed on a three foot by three foot square of hardwood. The front and back cover represents the signage and the title of the book is etched into it.

Text & Imagery

By using elements such as over-saturation of the imagery, the book portrays a positive essence of hope and revitalization. Besides titles, the only other text is recorded quotes from each interviewed store owner

Most of the book has a black background, portraying Detroit's rather ugly past. The last few pages have a yellow background, showing Detroit's bright future before the reader closes the book
